Flipboard falls into Technology Trigger section of Gartner’s Hype Cycle. It can be labeled as a “Content Enriched Service”. Being in the Technology trigger category means it’s a potential technology breakthrough kicks things off. Early proof-of-concept stories and media interest trigger significant publicity. Often no usable products exist and commercial viability is unproven. They are towards the top of this cycle which then leads into Peak of Inflated Expectations. They are startling the line of almost crossing over into this category which means early publication and it produces a number of success stories. This is great for Flipboard, however some companies experience bad stories and sink but it’s up to the company to act or not to at all.
